Physical discipline, eternal prize

You must run your race to win. Like an athlete, you must practice strict self-control to win the eternal prize. Run straight to the goal, with purpose in every step. Discipline your body to do what it should, so you won’t be disqualified from running, and winning, your race. (see 1 Corinthians 9: 24b-27 NLT)

What does physical discipline have to do with not being disqualified from our race for the eternal prize?
