It was for freedom that Christ set us free ; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)
Paul was warning the church in Galatia about falling back into legalism, and it remains a legitimate warning for the Church today. There are wolves in our midst that present themselves as authentic Christians, when in fact they threaten to draw unsuspecting believers into the apostasy of legalism.
But there are many other ways believers can allow themselves to be enslaved all over again. Whatever your slavery was before you came to Christ can overcome you again. And the world offers a smorgasbord of new options that can capture our minds and hearts and pull us away from the “things above” Paul talked about in Colossians 3:1-4. The dangers can be as obvious as drugs and pornography, or as subtle as sports or systematic theology.
Jesus paid a horrible price so we could be set free. Just as we must never take for granted the sacrifice of brave men and women who won our social/political freedom with their lives, we also must remain vigilant against enemy agents who would rob us of our spiritual freedom.
Today we celebrate our freedom from tyranny. Party hearty! But spend a few moments somewhere along the way to think about the tyrannies that endanger you today — both social/political and spiritual.
